It was for the second time that Puma India has made me a part of a huge event associated with Sneakers and I couldn’t control my excitement( LINK FOR THE FIRST EVENT HERE and HERE). The event this time was Sneaker Pimps, the famed Sneaker Pimps World Tour which was started way back in 2003 by Peter Fahey. The event was supposed to be held at two locations in India- Pune and Delhi, and I was there; witnessing the journey that would probably shape the sneaker culture of India in the days to come.
Sneaker Pimps World Tour was started by Peter Fahey in the year 2003. It is basically an exhibition of sneakers, both old and new. It was started by Peter and a couple of his friends who got their collections of different sneakers together. It is surprising that Sneaker Pimps World Tour, which is aptly named so, has been on the road ever since. It has traveled to almost 19 countries clocking around 60 cities so far. Featuring hundreds of killer kicks, both rare and new, the Pimps experience has grown over the years to include some legendary artists such as ‘Futura 2000‘ and Dave White, musicians such as Kendrick Lamar, Nas, Public Enemy, etc. It also consists of many other activities that makes up the street culture such as skating demos, live basketball, street art as well as live sneaker customizing from the modern masters SBTG and Meth.
This year, Sneaker Pimps toured to India and the whole programme was divided into two parts. First it traveled to Pune, Maharashtra on the 10th of March, 2018 and the following weekend, ie., on the 18th of March, it toured to the capital of India, Delhi in association with Homegrown Street on account of Street and Sneaker Festival. Some talented musicians such as DJ Neil Armstrong of the Jay-Z tour fame and some local musicians such as Divine, Prabhdeep and Raja Kumari were part of this. ‘Futura 2000’ also traveled with Sneaker Pimps and exhibited his LIVE mural of the iconic atom- graffiti. Well! it was an exhilarating experience to see them perform live and meet them in person. Probably, you won’t ever get to see those rare sneakers in your entire life, so does it make sense now?
My Fit for both Sneaker Pimps Pune and Delhi was curated with pieces from Puma as I was a part of the Puma Sneaker Crew. I was supposed to pick up a few pieces from one of the Puma Stores for these events and for Pune I picked up the black tights from the latest En Pointe collection. There is this brand Garuda, which is by far the only Indian techwear brand. It was introduced to me by one of my friends last year and since then I have been wanting to wear it. I went for a completely black outfit, giving it that of a techwear look.
As for the sneakers, I picked up the Puma Breaker Knit Carnival. The ‘PUMA BREAKERS’ mixes knit upper with leather side panels and a tongue less slip- on construction for a sock- like fit. Do you read ultra comfort? These kicks celebrate the Carnival of Brazil. You can see the beautiful Brazilian Carnival inspired formstrip and a few removable Brazilian jewels
This is only a small part of the entire blog. What went down in both the events and also what I wore to Sneaker Pimps Delhi will be up in the next part. So, there is more to the entire Sneaker Pimps story but I hope you got the gist of it. To all the Sneakerheads out there who missed the event, I feel bad for you as it was an out- of- the- world experience to check out so many rare sneakers and to all the non sneaker heads who were part of this event, kudos to you and welcome to the hood!
STAY TUNED for the SECOND PART.
