A few days back, the bassist of my ex- band CMajor3Minor, who call themselves CYPHER now, has shared the link to the latest song KHUDI of THE LOCAL TRAIN, the winner of the first season of the Sennheiser Top 50. That was a song which kept buzzing on my head for quiet sometime and then one fine morning I got an e- mail from SENNHEISER to write a blogpost on the SEASON 3 TOP 50. Last year’s finalé was one riot of a live performance and this e- mail meant free pass to a great evening filled with alluring performances by some of the really good bands of the country and also catching up with many aspiring musicians and music enthusiasts.
Unlike last year which didn’t have any zonal finalés, this year, Sennheiser is planning for a much massive live performance act with 4 zonal finalés across the country. Each zonal finalé shall have 3 bands competing with each other and the 4 winners of the 4 zones will compete at the grand finalé which will be held at Mumbai on 21st September. Last season saw many musicians and fans coming together to support the top 5 bands selected across India- PARVAAZ(Bangalore), PEEPAL TREE(Bangalore; Reason why I love this city; It’s full of talent!), BAREFACED LIAR(Delhi), SYMPHONY NOVEL(Mumbai) and DAIRA(Mumbai). Hence, we can tell how big this season is going to be with a total of 12 competing bands chosen from different corners of the nation.
The 3 bands which have been selected from over 500 bands to perform at the south zone venue partner Humming Tree, Bangalore are below:
ATFC is a three piece ‘Fat Rock’ band that was founded in June 2008. The genre is reflected in most of the band’s helplessly catchy numbers that include- ‘Shut up and dance’, ‘I predict an earthquake’ ‘My Favorite Heartbreaker’, ‘Pimple Disco’ and so much more. To add to their music they play occasional covers that are recreated to produce their version of the song. The band’s single “Somebody Else” was nominated by Rolling Stones India as one of its 10 Best Indian Singles of 2015. It is known for their live act including instances of Eben(above, frontman) wearing a nightgown with lipstick and a bindi on stage.
Samir Rishu Mohanty, hails from Puri, Orissa. It all started with some anguish, frustration and some unspoken feelings which had to be put out to the world. He started rapping at the age of 18 after watching the movie 8 mile. Inspired by the rawness and the sheer power of the freedom of expression, he began to pen down his own thoughts in the form of rhymes. His lyric predominantly focuses on uplifting lives and inspiring people to overcome everyday struggles.
When Chai Met Toast takes inspiration from the lighter side of life to create music that is heart-warming, happy and smile worthy. The newest band from the land of coconuts, they gained fans quickly with a special acoustic setup and a unique brand of infectious happy music, which transcends age, genre and even language.
Here’s the jury to select the winning band from the south zone:
As mentioned earlier, this time there are 4 zonal finalés across the nation, each zone having 3 bands competing each other, chosen across all the entries. The winner of the grand finalé gets a two year endorsement with Sennheiser with access to Sennheiser gear, the opportunity to perform at an acclaimed music festival, be the face of Sennheiser for the next two years across catalogues & branding. The bands from each of the zones are as follows:

I am very thrilled to attend this gig to hum to the the numbers of VASU DIXIT PROJECT who happens to be one of my favourite Indian bands and to support the three competing bands.
